Wired vs. Ethernet vs. Wireless vs. Cellular Storage Gate Keypads: Which Fits Your Facility?

Facility owners usually ask which keypad technology is "best." That's the wrong question: wired, ethernet, wireless, and cellular keypads all do the same job at the gate. The right question is what your property looks like: where your gates are, what wiring already exists, and what kind of internet (if any) reaches the site. Every RCS system runs KP-Control software, so you are never choosing between features. You are only choosing how the signal travels between your office and your gate.

The Short Answer

  • Existing conduit or a new build? Go wired with On-Site. Nothing beats copper for reliability.
  • Network drops already at your gates, and you want the cloud? Go ethernet with IP-Link: straight to KP-Control Enterprise, no on-site computer.
  • Need a keypad where wires can't reasonably go? Go wireless with Air-Link: 3,000 to 5,000 feet of range, even through metal buildings.
  • No reliable internet at the property? Go cellular with Cell-Link: one cellular connection runs the whole site.

On-Site: The Wired Standard

The On-Site system communicates over an industry-standard wired RS-485 network, the same approach most keypad systems from any brand have used for decades. That is not old-fashioned; it is proven. A hardwired connection is immune to interference, delivers real-time updates and high-speed gate triggering, and simply does not care about weather, distance within the wire run, or what is built between the office and the gate.

Wired is the right call when communication wires or conduit already exist (including facilities replacing an older system from another brand, since On-Site is built for direct swap-outs using the wiring that's already in the ground), and for new construction, where running wire during the build costs a fraction of what it costs later. The system supports up to 32 keypads and 2,250 tenant codes or cards, with a battery-backed SYS-MAN controller that keeps your facility secure through power and internet outages.

The honest limit: if the wires are not there, getting them there means trenching: cutting through pavement, boring under driveways, and paying for the labor. That is precisely the problem the next three systems exist to solve.

IP-Link: Ethernet Straight to the Cloud

The IP-Link system takes a different path than On-Site: instead of a proprietary communication network running back to a controller in your office, each keypad plugs into your network with a standard ethernet cable and talks directly to KP-Control Enterprise in the cloud. Same industrial hardware as On-Site (same enclosure, same backlit metal buttons, same daylight readable display, same prox card reader and intercom options), with the communication board swapped for ethernet.

Ethernet is the right call when network drops already reach your gates, or when a network cable is easy to pull, and you want cloud management without an on-site computer to maintain. Add a keypad by adding a drop; there is no central box the whole property depends on. Internet-connected keypads have been available in this industry for years, generally at a price that assumes you have no alternative. The honest limit: IP-Link needs a real internet connection at the property and an ethernet drop at every keypad, and it runs on KP-Control Enterprise only: it is not compatible with the free KP-Control Desktop software. If either of those is a problem, one of the other three systems is the better fit, and we will say so.

Air-Link: Wireless, Without the Weak Points

The Air-Link system replaces the communication wire with a wireless RF link, with a range of 3,000 to 5,000 feet using built-in antennas: no external hardware, no third-party radio modules. It is designed to punch through the obstruction that defeats consumer-grade wireless: rows of metal storage buildings.

Wireless earns its keep anywhere a wire run is impractical: a keypad at the back of the property, a gate across or down the street, a stand-alone keypad at the front gate that has never talked to your office, or a facility where the original communication wiring was damaged and re-trenching makes no sense. Air-Link keypads support 2,000 codes or cards, run on 12–24 volts AC or DC for easy retrofits, and connect to the same SYS-MAN controller as their wired siblings.

The honest limit: wireless still needs a working link back to a controller on the property, and range depends on distance and obstructions, which is why we talk through your specific layout on the phone before recommending it.

Cell-Link: For Properties the Internet Forgot

The Cell-Link system solves a different problem entirely. On-Site, IP-Link, and Air-Link all assume some kind of connection already reaches the property. Cell-Link assumes nothing: it puts a cellular connection in the keypad controller itself, so a remote annex, an unmanned lot, or a rural facility with no internet service gets the same real-time management as a staffed site.

The unit arrives pre-configured with its cellular account managed by RCS. Drop it in, connect power and the gate, and manage the site from anywhere through KP-Control. One cellular connection carries the entire property: up to 31 additional keypads can share it with no added monthly fees. Cell-Link supports 2,250 codes or cards and includes its 24-volt DC power supply.

The honest limit: cellular is the one option that carries a monthly fee (a single low fee for the whole system), and it needs cell coverage at the property, which we confirm with you before anything ships.

The Part Most Owners Miss: You Can Mix Them

Here is what the "wired vs. wireless" framing gets wrong: with RCS, it is not an either/or decision. On-Site, Air-Link, and Cell-Link keypads all work together on the same system. A typical mixed facility runs wired On-Site keypads at the main gate where conduit exists, an Air-Link wireless keypad at the back lot where it doesn't and, if the property has no internet, a Cell-Link controller carrying all of them over one cellular connection. Your tenants notice nothing. Your software shows one facility.

That flexibility is why the honest answer to "which one should I buy" is usually "which combination", and it is a five-minute conversation once you describe your lot.

What About Cost?

The dollars in this decision are mostly not in the keypads; they are in the dirt. Running new communication wire means trenching, boring, conduit, and labor, and on a built-out facility that routinely runs into thousands of dollars for a single distant gate. A wireless keypad eliminates that line item entirely, which is why Air-Link frequently pays for itself before it is ever installed. Cellular trades a modest monthly fee for never needing an internet contract, wiring, or an on-site computer at a remote property.

Ethernet sits in between: if network drops already reach your gates, IP-Link costs you no trenching at all, and it is priced deliberately below the internet-connected keypad systems this industry has gotten used to paying for. On the software side, On-Site, Air-Link, and Cell-Link all run the free KP-Control Desktop software if you want zero recurring software cost; IP-Link requires the KP-Control Enterprise subscription, which is the tradeoff for browser-based management with no computer at the property.
